AccessiblityAccessibility to information is our right as Americans. Accessibility in the school library is just as important as it is in the public library and through the internet. The Ireland Library supports students with accessibility needs. Here are some links for more information about accessibility:

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)www.ada.gov/cguide.htm#anchor65310
This act ensures that students are given a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment that is appropriate for their needs. It also provides for universal design of physical and technological components of learning. |
ALA Recommendations for Assistive Tech
There are things that libraries can to help all patrons have access to information. Providing ample room to maneuver in a wheel chair or with braces, having books on lower shelves, and providing books on cd or via eBooks are just a few ways libraries can accommodate the diverse needs of its users. Clearly visible signs throughout the library can be seen as assistive technology. Computers can be useful tools as well. Most monitors are in color. There are text to speech and speech to text options. Students can use headphone to hear more clearly. Keyboard with large print or touch screens can also assist students with special needs. - Librarians need to work with the IEP (Individual Education Plan) team to help provide support for the students educational needs as well as learn if any acquisitions need to be made for the library to help the special needs of the student.
- Keep current on available resources by reading professional publications and by collaborating with the Special Education team on campus.
- Make the library accessible by removing physical barriers to information.
